The Five Basic Lure Retrieves by Greg Mitchell
There are many times when you want to fish, but you either do not have bait, or do not want to get the needed bait, be it a simple night crawler or the more-difficult-to-get small tuna for marlin fishing. The obvious solution to this predicament is, naturally, lures, those artificial facsimiles of natural baits. But since they are not living things, they need to be worked to move like the natural organisms they emulate. There are five basic retrieves used in lure fishing, as below.
Straight retrieve. The easiest and least fancy: just cast the lure and reel it in. This type of retrieve is often used in retrieving spinner baits, buzz baits, propeller baits, feather jigs and top water poppers in some instances. Depending on the target fish, you can either reel it in slow, fast and very fast, called ‘burning’. For example, during the cold weather, bass and walleyes may prefer a slow retrieve; sometimes slow enough to test your patience. On the other hand, barracuda and wazoo always prefer a fast straight retrieve; while jacks may want it a little slower.
Stop-and- go. Some anglers consider this a variation of the straight retrieve and they may not be wrong. As the name implies, the action is simply reel, pause, reel, pause, mostly used in slow-floating and suspending crank baits. It makes the lure act like a wounded bait fish struggling to dive, gets exhausted and begins to float up, but tries again. That action looks to a predator fish is easy picking, so he picks. For deep-diving crank baits hitting bottom, the lures appears like bait fish foraging on the bottom and is unaware of danger.
Twitch and/or jerk. Very effective for top water frogs, insect lures, poppers/chiggers and some specific lures called ‘jerk baits’. The splash of a falling lures signals to the fish something has fallen into the water, and the twitch-short jerk retrieve simulates something struggling to gain the shore. The fish reacts by smashing the lure -to his later chagrin–before it can reach the safety of the shore. This retrieve is also used in small poppers, frogs, jigs, plastic worms and similar types of soft bait lures.
Ripping. The action is done by giving the rod a long sideways sweep, pausing to reel in the slack, then doing it again. For saltwater poppers, the action enables the lure to simulate a fleeing bait fish such as a flying fish or ballyhoo, which predator fish like jacks and tuna find very enticing. The strikes can be very violent. Aside from poppers, there are lure models designed for this specific style of retrieve, mostly slash baits.
Walk-the-dog. Here the lure is made to move side to side in the classic zigzag pattern to copy the movements of a wounded mullet and such small fish. Many lures are designed to perform this action but the original was the Zara Spook by Hedda, and Raphaela has recently developed a subsurface lure with the walk-the-dog action.
These are the five basic retrieves, but many anglers mix them up sometimes in a single cast, mainly to find out which is effective for the moment. They are mutually exclusive, so if your usual retrieve does not seem to work, try variations and improvise. Sometimes it can make a good Fishing Time into an extraordinary one.
